At first, you might not have thought much about that vein in your leg that started bulging a little. But over time, it has become more pronounced and may even ache or itch. Now, you’re wondering—what can you do to prevent varicose veins from getting worse?

What causes varicose veins to worsen?

Varicose veins develop when the valves in your leg veins malfunction. These valves are designed to keep blood flowing in the right direction, but when they weaken due to age, injury, or other factors, blood can pool in the veins. This leads to increased pressure, causing the veins to bulge and twist visibly.

Several factors can exacerbate varicose veins, including prolonged sitting or standing, obesity, lack of physical activity, and pregnancy. While existing vein damage cannot be reversed, there are steps you can take to slow the progression and reduce discomfort.

Stay active

Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining healthy circulation. Exercises such as walking, swimming, and cycling help strengthen the leg muscles, which in turn assist the veins in moving blood efficiently. On the other hand, prolonged immobility—whether sitting at a desk or standing for long periods—can contribute to blood pooling in the legs.

To counteract this, take breaks throughout the day to walk or stretch. If you’re seated for long hours, try pumping your ankles once an hour to engage your calf muscles. Even small movements can improve blood flow and help prevent varicose veins from getting worse.

Elevate your legs

Raising your legs above heart level for 15 to 20 minutes a few times a day can significantly reduce venous pressure and improve circulation. You can do this by lying on a bed with pillows under your legs or resting your legs against a wall. If you’re sitting for extended periods, using a footrest to elevate your feet can also help reduce swelling and discomfort.

Wear compression socks

Compression stockings apply gentle pressure to the legs, promoting blood flow and reducing varicose vein symptoms. Available in both prescription and non-prescription strengths, they can help minimize swelling, heaviness, and discomfort. However, if you have other circulatory conditions, such as peripheral artery disease, consult your doctor before using compression therapy.

Maintain a healthy weight

Excess body weight increases pressure on your veins, making varicose veins worse. While weight loss can be challenging, even small lifestyle changes—such as balanced nutrition and regular exercise—can help reduce strain on your veins. Consulting a nutritionist or engaging in a manageable fitness routine can contribute to better vein health.

Wear vein-friendly clothing

Tight-fitting clothing, particularly around the waist and thighs, can restrict circulation and exacerbate varicose veins. High-heeled shoes also hinder the natural movement of the calf muscles, reducing their ability to support blood flow. Opting for comfortable, supportive footwear and loose-fitting attire can make a significant difference in vein health. For example, swap high heels for stylish flats and tight skirts for flowy dresses to keep circulation unobstructed.

Can you get rid of varicose veins entirely?

Yes! While lifestyle changes can help prevent varicose veins from getting worse, they won’t eliminate existing varicose veins. Fortunately, minimally invasive medical treatments offer safe and effective solutions. These treatments, performed in a doctor’s office, can permanently remove varicose veins with little to no downtime.

Take control of your vein health

Even though varicose veins cannot be reversed naturally, taking proactive steps can help prevent varicose veins from getting worse and improve your overall vein health. By staying active, elevating your legs, wearing compression socks, and maintaining a healthy weight, you can slow the progression of vein disease and reduce discomfort. If you’re ready to explore treatment options, modern vein procedures can provide long-term relief and restore the health and appearance of your legs.
